Say goodbye to single-use plastic: warewashing solutions for reusable takeaway containers are the next big thing

, Category Warewashing technology

Bans on plastic bags, plastic cups and plastic dishes are on the rise all over the world. More interest in sustainability is driving change for hotels, restaurants, bars, cafés and communal catering and that presents challenges. The hygiene specialists at MEIKO have developed a solution to the fight against plastic waste with a new bottle washing system – a sustainable and hygienic option for both bottles and carafes.

The whole food service industry has been in the grip of the new wave of homemade fruit drinks and flavoured waters for a while now and even the traditional options of sparkling or still water are now served in glass bottles or carafes. Washing these items requires new solutions but it is easy with the new Meiko bottle rack system.

Just a few movements can turn your glass and dishwasher into a machine specially designed for cleaning reusable bottles: simply replace the bottom wash arm with the adapter included and it’s ready! 16 glass bottles in any standard size or shape, along with carafes, can be washed in a jiffy using the M-iClean U, which can clean bottles all the way up to an external diameter of 114 mm and even lab bottles are not a problem. This system uses separate sealed pipes to send wash water first and followed by rinse aid to special nozzles that spray directly into the bottle interior with water. This prevents detergent residues and ensures hygienically clean washware.

The best part is that the bottle rack system fits any M-iClean UM or UM+ and is easy to switch in and out even on older models. That means you can be flexible when the make up of your washware changes suddenly. This tested process is also resource efficient, reduces payroll costs, saves time, hygienically safe, and complies with DIN regulations (SPEC 10534). This is one of the contributions made by MEIKO towards establishing sustainable systems for reusable items in food service.

On the topic of hygiene:

Recent events have highlighted the importance of hygiene. The independent hygiene laboratory, HygCen Germany GmbH, has verified the effectiveness of M-iClean undercounter dishwashing machines regarding the novel coronavirus. ‘Meiko devices are able to process washware in such a way that it can be reused without hesitation, even if it has previously been used by infected or sick people,’ says visiting lecturer, Dr Friedrich von Rheinbaben.
