With the new workshop, we’re fully self‑sufficient. We benefit from shorter distances and faster SCBA turnarounds, and keep complete control over quality and hygiene.

PUSHING SAFETY TO THE MAX
With several thousand visitors passing through its gates every day, Europa‑Park operates much like a medium‑sized town. To ensure rapid response in an emergency, a state‑of‑the‑art control centre with an integrated fire station has been built. From here, every area of the park can be reached within four minutes, and the first response vehicle is on the move no later than 90 seconds after an alarm comes in.
A team of 55 full‑time firefighters provides round‑the‑clock preventive and operational fire protection. They monitor fire‑detection systems, coordinate maintenance work, advise on new construction projects and deliver rapid assistance in an emergency. They are supported by 25 volunteer firefighters. In total, the company fire service handles up to 700 callouts each year – from fire alarms and technical assistance to medical emergencies.
WHY BUILD AN IN‑HOUSE SCBA WORKSHOP?
As the park continued to grow, so did the volume of personal protective equipment. BA masks, self-contained breathing apparatus, air cylinders and chemical protective suits must all be thoroughly cleaned and inspected, and the whole process must be fully documented after every deployment. Previously, this servicing was outsourced – a time‑consuming, staff-intensive process that involved long transport routes.

“With the new workshop, we’re fully self‑sufficient,” says Philipp Trahasch, Head of the SCBA workshop. “We benefit from shorter distances and faster SCBA turnarounds, and keep complete control over quality and hygiene.” Today, the team doesn’t just maintain its own equipment – it also services the SCBA used by the Rust fire department. The new workshop strengthens regional cooperation, while also improving overall cost‑effectiveness.
Today, we’re in full control of every step. This reduces downtime significantly and ensures that a sufficient number of fully tested appliances are always available.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY FOR MAXIMUM HYGIENE

The new SCBA workshop now services more than 100 BA masks, 40 SCBA, over 80 regulators, 50 air cylinders and eight chemical protective suits. Additional equipment is regularly added to the workflow, including training masks for first‑aid courses and specialist masks from Rulantica’s water world.

After a call-out, the soiled protective equipment is routed through a clearly defined “dirty area” before entering the washing and decontamination areas. If the equipment is soiled heavily, it is pre-cleaned manually. The equipment is thoroughly cleaned in the TopClean D respirator washer, removing dirt, soot and contaminants. Masks and regulators are dismantled into individual components, then cleaned and disinfected in the TopClean H before being dried in the drying cabinet.

Each component is checked and replaced, if necessary. Once it has passed the final inspection, the equipment is packed, labelled and returned to storage. This seamless process ensures the highest hygiene standards and maximum safety for the firefighters.
READY TO USE AGAIN IN NO TIME
The biggest advantage of the SCBA workshop is its fast turnaround. Depending on the workload, equipment that arrives in the morning can be ready for use again by the afternoon. In the past, this process often took several days when handled by an external provider.
“Today, we’re in full control of every step,” says Trahasch. “This reduces downtime significantly and ensures that a sufficient number of fully tested appliances are always available.” In a company fire service operating around the clock, this level of availability is crucial , ensuring no time is lost when it really matters.
IMPROVED SAFETY FOR EMPLOYEES
Apart from efficiency, health and safety are paramount. Closed cleaning processes minimise contact with contaminants and significantly reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Ergonomically designed workstations and streamlined workflows help create a safer environment that reduces physical strain.
The new workshop therefore improves safety levels for both visitors and staff on site. Spotless, fully functional protective equipment is key to ensuring maximum safety in action – an essential element of firefighters’ daily work.
A STRONG PARTNER FOR PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION
Europa‑Park turned to MEIKOas an experienced specialist for the planning and fit‑out of its SCBA workshop. Everything from the initial concept and space planning through to the technical fit‑out was delivered by a single provider. Short communication channels, flexible adjustments during the construction phase and reliable service were key to the project’s success.
IMPROVED SAFETY – MORE ENJOYMENT
The new SCBA workshop is a core element in Europa-Park's comprehensive safety concept. It ensures that the firefighters are fully equipped at all times and ready to respond swiftly. The outcome: maximum safety for millions of guests and the thousands of employees who support them.
While visitors immerse themselves in the fun, a highly professional team works behind the scenes to minimise risks and provide fast, reliable assistance in an emergency. The new SCBA workshop plays a vital role in ensuring that a visit to Europa‑Park is not only thrilling but, first and foremost, safe – and all the more fun as a result.
